What a Compact LS Tractor Handles Through a Mississippi Year

South Mississippi land stays busy twelve months a year. Here is a practical look at what a compact LS tractor from 25 to 42 HP actually does in each season.

A lot of buyers come in asking whether a compact tractor will really earn its keep year-round. It is a fair question. A machine that sits in the barn from December through February is harder to justify.

The answer depends on what you are doing with your land. For most places in Covington County and the surrounding area, a compact LS tractor in the 25 to 42 HP class stays busy all twelve months. Here is what that actually looks like through the calendar.

Fall: Food Plots and Field Prep

October and November are the busiest months for hobby farmers and hunters around here. If you are running food plots, you need to disk or till the ground, spread lime and fertilizer, and sometimes drag a cultipacker or seeder over it.

A 25 HP machine will cover a small plot, but once you get to a couple of acres of hard-packed clay, you want at least 30 PTO horses behind your tiller. The MT232HE puts out 26.2 PTO HP on a hydrostatic drive, which keeps pace with a 60-inch tiller on our typical red clay. The MT242HE steps that up to 34.8 PTO HP, which pulls a bigger tiller or a heavier disk with room to spare on 20 acres or more.

If you are cutting brush to open up new plots, those same PTO numbers drive a rotary cutter from our attachment lineup. The MRC3060SC handles light to medium brush on a 25-to-30 PTO HP tractor. The 72-inch MRC5072SC wants at least 35 PTO HP, which the MT242HE delivers without straining.

Winter: Feeding and Storm Cleanup

Winter here is mild compared to most of the country, but it is not idle time on a working property. If you run cattle or horses, January means moving round bales or sacks of feed across a wet pasture. A front-end loader earns its keep fast.

The LL3003 loader that pairs with the MT232HE and MT242HE lifts just over 2,500 pounds on a 66-inch bucket. That handles a 1,200-pound round bale when the tractor is loaded correctly and the ground is firm enough to support you. A sub-compact with its smaller loader frame will not get there.

South Mississippi also takes ice storms and wind events that leave debris across driveways and fence rows. A bucket and a rear blade clear a downed-limb situation that would take a crew half a day with chainsaws.

Spring: Driveway Grading and Brush Control

March through May is when the potholes show up. Clay-heavy gravel driveways shift all winter, and by the time the ground dries out in spring there are low spots and ruts that need to be dragged and graded back.

A box blade behind a compact tractor does this work well. The MT226HE at 24.6 HP handles a standard box blade on a short residential driveway. For a longer run, or a heavier grader, you want the MT232HE or MT242HE so you are not lugging the engine every time you hit a heavy spot.

Spring also brings fast fence-row growth. Running a 60-inch rotary cutter along a fence line on a property that hasn't been cut since fall takes real horsepower. Budget 20 to 25 PTO HP per foot of cutter width as a rough guide, and add a margin if the grass is tall and damp.

Summer: Maintenance Mowing and Pasture Work

June through August in South Mississippi is hot, humid, and hard on equipment. Food plots need to stay mowed between growing seasons. Pastures need to be clipped after the first hay cutting. Gravel roads throw dust and need occasional drag work after summer storms.

The main thing to know about summer tractor work here is heat management. If you are running hard for more than an hour at a stretch, an open-station machine is tough on you personally. That is part of what drives buyers toward cab models like the MT347HC, which puts you in A/C with a factory-sealed cab. For the person who plans to run several hours in the field from April through September, the cab pays for itself in operator stamina by mid-July.

Sizing It Right

A 24 to 32 HP compact handles most of what a 10-to-20-acre property needs through the year: food plots, gravel work, light bale moving, fence-row maintenance. Step up to 40-plus HP when the property gets bigger, the hay equipment gets heavier, or the PTO loads get more demanding.

If the monthly payment is the sticking point, LS financing on the MT2E compact line can run as low as 0% for 120 months on select models, which changes the math considerably compared to paying cash out of pocket.
