LS LB3002 Backhoe Attachment: What It Digs and Who Needs It

The LB3002 backhoe turns your LS compact into a digging machine. Here is who actually needs one on a South Mississippi property.

The loader on your LS tractor is the right tool for most days. Gravel, dirt, feed sacks, round bales, brush piles. It handles about ninety percent of what comes up on a small South Mississippi property.

But the other ten percent involves holes. Fence posts, drain ditches, a trench for a water line out to a back pasture trough, a pond edge that has silted in and needs cleaning. A loader bucket can scratch at that work, but it cannot do it right. That is where the LB3002 backhoe comes in.

What the LB3002 Is

The LB3002 is LS's 3-point hitch backhoe, designed to mount on the rear of LS compact and utility tractors. It comes with a subframe included, which matters because a subframe gives the backhoe a rigid connection to the tractor frame rather than relying on just the hitch pins. That rigidity is what lets it dig without flexing under load.

The backhoe itself is a standard rear-dig setup. You lower it into position, extend the stabilizer legs to plant the machine, and use two independent hydraulic control levers to work the boom and bucket. If you have never run one before, plan to spend a couple of hours getting comfortable before you try to lay out a straight trench line. It is a learnable skill and most people pick it up quickly enough, but it rewards patience over muscle.

Where It Earns Its Keep on a South Mississippi Place

The LB3002 makes the most sense when your land has recurring digging needs rather than a one-time project.

Fence building. If you run cattle or horses, you are always adding fence or repairing it. Hand-digging post holes in the red clay and hardpan around Collins is real work. A backhoe drops a fence post hole to the right depth in under a minute, including breaking through any gravel layer underneath.

Drainage work. South Mississippi gets rain. A lot of it. Low spots along driveways, fields, and barn lots fill and stay wet because the natural drainage is blocked or inadequate. Cutting a small diversion ditch with a backhoe is a half-day job that can dry out a spot that has stayed muddy for years.

Water line trenching. Putting water to a remote trough is cheap if you have a backhoe. You lay conduit or poly pipe in the trench, cover it back up, and the job is done. Without a backhoe, that same run is either an expensive call to a contractor or it does not happen.

Pond maintenance. Shallow stock ponds and wildlife ponds silt in over time, especially around the shallow end. A backhoe cannot do the heavy dredging work a dozer does, but it can clean edges, reshape shallow coves, and remove root intrusion around drainage structure. For keeping a pond functional between bigger maintenance cycles, it covers the work.

Which LS Tractors It Pairs With

The LB3002 pairs with the compact and utility tractors we carry here at Dykes Motors. The MT2E compact series runs from 24.6 to 42.5 HP and the MT3 compact series runs from 35 to 57 HP. Both have the hydraulic flow to run the backhoe through a day of digging without straining the system.

You can order the tractor and backhoe together as a package, or add the backhoe to a tractor you already own. If you are thinking about the combination from the start, ordering them together usually makes more sense from a setup standpoint.

The utility tractors in our lineup will also run the backhoe and have the frame and hydraulics to push it harder, which matters if you are trenching longer runs or digging in dense soil.

Who Should Not Buy One

A backhoe adds weight, storage complexity, and a learning curve. If you have fewer than five acres, dig maybe twice a year, and the work is light, you are better off renting or calling a neighbor. The rental economy for backhoe work in Mississippi is real and inexpensive when the job is occasional.

If your property has a consistent need for digging on a regular schedule, that math changes. Rental costs add up faster than people expect, and the convenience of having the machine on site is hard to put a number on once you have had it.

One more honest caveat: if you are buying a tractor and adding a backhoe primarily to dig a single large pond, a dedicated excavator contractor will outperform you by a wide margin. The LB3002 is the right tool for property maintenance and targeted jobs. Major earthmoving is still a different machine.

The Honest Summary

The LB3002 is not a flashy attachment and it will not change how people see your place from the road. What it does is handle a specific category of work that nothing else on your tractor can do, and it does it well. If digging is a regular part of managing your land, it is worth a look.

If you want to see how LS packages the backhoe with their compact tractors, LS financing options can make the combination more approachable than buying them separately over time.
