Compact or Utility: When the LS MT4 Makes Sense
Compact tractors cover most jobs on 5 to 40 acres. Here is what actually pushes buyers into the MT4 utility range and why it matters.
The compact tractor handles almost everything most small-acreage buyers throw at it. Mowing, grading, food plots, a box blade on the back, a loader on the front. A 45 to 57 HP machine with a 2,600-pound loader and a solid three-point hitch covers more ground than most people realize when they first start shopping.
But there is a point where the job outgrows the machine. The question is where that line is.

At Dykes Motors, we carry the full LS lineup, from sub-compact tractors through the MT4 and MT7 utility series. Most buyers land on a compact and never look back. A few have acreage or a workload that puts them in different territory. Here is how to tell which side you are on.
What the MT4 adds
The LS MT4 Series starts at the MT463, a 63 HP diesel paired with the LL5001 loader. That loader lifts 3,487 pounds on a 78-inch bucket. The three-point hitch is rated at 3,483 pounds.
Compare that to the top compact, the MT357HC cab model:
| MT357HC (compact cab) | MT463 (utility) | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine HP | 57 | 63 |
| PTO HP | 48.4 | 54.1 |
| Loader lift | 2,680 lb | 3,487 lb |
| Loader bucket | 72 in | 78 in |
| Hitch lift | 2,755 lb | 3,483 lb |
| Transmission | HST | Gear (16F x 16R) |
Those numbers are a step, not a leap. But the MT4 frame is heavier, which matters for traction when you are pulling big implements. The 16-speed gear transmission has more range for slow row work. The PTO delivers more horsepower where the load shows up most.

Four situations where compact runs out of machine
Round bale handling. Picking up and moving 5-foot round bales with a bale spear puts real stress on a loader. The compact loaders handle it, but the MT4's LL5001 at 3,487 pounds has the margin to move bales quickly and stack them without working at the edge of rated capacity.
Running hay equipment. A mid-size disc mower or round baler running through thick coastal bermuda in August needs real PTO power to keep from slowing down in heavy growth. The MT463 delivers 54.1 PTO HP. The larger MT473 delivers 62.9. Most small hay operations want to be in that range when the grass is thick and the window is short.
Heavy grading work. A 72-inch land grader behind a compact does fine on packed dirt. Add caliche, hardpan clay, or a heavily rutted gravel road and the frame weight difference starts to matter. The MT4 puts more machine behind the implement.
Properties over 50 acres with varied terrain. Total acreage matters less than what you are doing on it, but it stacks with the other factors. If you have pasture, row crop, and timber to maintain and the tractor runs most days, the utility frame holds up better over time than a compact running at its limits.
Who should stay on the compact side
If your place is 5 to 40 acres and the main jobs are mowing, food plots, light grading, and occasional loader work, a compact tractor does the work and costs less to buy, fuel, and maintain. The LS compact lineup at Dykes Motors runs from 24 to 57 HP with cab and open station options, so there is room to fit the work without stepping into utility territory.
The compact also fits better on properties with tight spaces: small sheds, narrow gates, orchard rows, or anywhere maneuvering in close quarters matters more than raw power. The MT4 is a bigger machine, and bigger is not always the right call for the specific job.
Financing is worth factoring in too. The LS financing programs on compact models run at 0 percent for up to 10 years on select configurations. That changes the monthly math considerably, and a well-financed compact bought at the right size beats an oversized tractor you spend more on every time you fuel it.
The MT4 lineup at Dykes Motors
We carry the MT463 and the MT473CPS. The MT463 is an open station gear tractor, 63 HP and honest. The MT473CPS is a 73 HP cab model with PowerShift, for the operator who puts in full days and wants climate control alongside the capability. Both pair with the LL5001 loader, 3,487 pounds of lift on a 78-inch bucket. Both carry the LS 6-year powertrain warranty with no deductible, which covers the powertrain for six years and bumper to bumper for two.
See the full LS utility tractor page for current details and ordering information, or browse the LS attachment lineup if you are thinking about implements alongside the tractor.
If you want to sit in one before you decide, come out to 3069 Hwy 49 in Collins. We can put you on both the MT347HC and the MT463 back to back, which makes the call a lot clearer than a spec sheet does. Call (601) 516-7255 to check availability first.
