Cab or Open Station: Choosing the Right LS Tractor for Mississippi
A real look at when a factory cab is worth the cost on an LS tractor, and when the open station is the smarter choice for South Mississippi buyers.
The question comes up almost every time someone walks the lot in August. They see the MT347HC with the factory cab and ask how much extra that is, or they say they would never buy a tractor without one. Both answers make sense for South Mississippi. The decision comes down to how often and how long you are on the machine.
What the factory cab actually is
On the compact tractors in our LS lineup, a factory cab is a sealed, integrated operator station with heat and air conditioning built in at the factory. On the MT347HC and MT357HC, the glass is sealed, the HVAC is part of the machine, and the ROPS frame is the cab structure itself. It is not an aftermarket canopy or a plastic windscreen clamped on later.
That distinction matters. Aftermarket cab kits are not the same thing. They add noise and vibration the factory unit does not have, and the A/C performance is not comparable. If you want real air conditioning, buy a factory cab tractor from the start, not a cab kit on an open-station frame.
The case for the cab in South Mississippi
The heat index in Mississippi hits 105 degrees by mid-June and stays there through September. If you are bush-hogging on an open station in July, you will stop before the work is finished. The cab keeps you going.

Most open-station buyers know their habits. They start early, take the midday break, and wrap up by three. If your jobs run under an hour at a stretch, moving round bales, grading the driveway, feeding cattle, you can do that before the heat becomes a real problem.
Pole barn clearance is the other consideration. Factory cab tractors are taller than open-station equivalents. If your storage is tight, measure the clearance before you order.
Who should think twice about the cab
If you are on less than 20 acres and most of your tractor time is short jobs under 45 minutes, the cab spends the summer sitting in the barn. The open-station compact does the same work at a lower cost and gives you nothing to regret.
Cab tractors also carry cab-specific maintenance: HVAC air filters, door seals, and cab glass are recurring line items. They are not expensive individually, but they exist. Budget for them from day one.

The gear-drive MT345E has a slightly higher hitch rating because of frame weight distribution. The cab model gives you the hydrostatic transmission and the enclosed station. Neither is a wrong choice. The real question is how long you will sit in the seat come July.
