Bobcat CT4045 vs CT4050: Hydrostatic or Gear, and Why the Bigger Engine Costs Less
The CT4050 has more horsepower than the CT4045 and a lower price. The catch is the transmission. Specs and current prices side by side from our Collins, MS Bobcat dealership.
Most buyers expect the bigger engine to cost more. Not here. The CT4050 makes more power than the CT4045 and is the lower price of the two. The reason is the transmission, and it is worth understanding before you decide.

Same tractor, different drivetrain
Everything under the seat that is not the engine and transmission is identical. Same 2,716 lb lift, same weight, same tank, same wheelbase. So the choice comes down to two things: how you want to drive it and how much power you want at the PTO.
Hydrostatic: easier on the operator
On the CT4045 you push a pedal forward or back and the tractor goes forward or back, with no clutching and no shifting between your loader cycles. If you spend your day lifting a bucket, backing up and doing it again, that is the tractor that wears you out less.
Synchro 8x8: more power, simpler gear work
The CT4050 gives you eight forward and eight reverse speeds you pick yourself. You get 6.5 more PTO horsepower than the CT4045, which is a real difference when you are pulling a 72 inch tiller or a larger rotary cutter. The trade is shifting and clutch work.
Which one fits your work
Choose the CT4045 if the loader is the main job and you want the easy drive. Choose the CT4050 if the work is mostly implements behind the tractor and you would rather have the power and the lower price.
Both fit the same 3-point implements Bobcat lists for them, including the 72 inch box blade and the 72 inch tiller. For the whole lineup, see our Bobcat compact tractor price guide.
